What 3CX Is – AKA Where Am I?

Throughout this site we talk about 3CX – it would probably be a good idea to explain what 3CX is.

Simply put, 3CX is the company that produces a product also called 3CX, which is a Unified Communication Platform.

3CX’s Unified Communications Platform consists of a few parts, namely:

• Telephone
  Making / receiving calls to the PSTN, internal 3CX users, or SIP users.
• Chat
  Both between internal 3CX users and external users, with the latter usually being visitors on your website
• Web Meetings
  Meetings using your web browser / mobile app, including video, screensharing, and more. Meetings can be given in the traditional meeting format as well as the Webinar style.

When dealing with telephony, the core/original part of the 3CX software, there are usually 3 parts in play

• The phone itself (the microphone and speakers you use to talk and listen)
• The phone system itself (the brains of the system)
• The inter-connectivity of the system with the world at large – usually in the form of a SIP trunk provider

The 3CX telephony platform mainly consists of the second item, with a slight dabbling in the first item via their soft phones. That is to say, 3CX is mostly the brains behind the scenes, although they have made their own software phones that run on your computer/mobile device.
