3CX claims to be an open standard PBX. For the most part, that’s true – anything that follows the SIP Protocols can usually interact with 3CX. But unfortunately that’s not 100% true – sometimes a system “won’t work” and it’s because 3CX hasn’t gotten their kickbacks from the system provider.
In this post we’re going to discuss 2 such instances – although there are quite a few others we could discuss as well.
SIP Trunk Provider Telnyx
In March of 2022 (roughly), 3CX released a new version and users were quick to notice that Telnyx, once a supported SIP provider, was no longer listed. It wasn’t long before the truth came out – 3CX went to all their providers before launching their StartUP product and demanded a commission. Telnyx decided not to provide a 30% commission and 3CX removed them. I almost never provide links, but it’s laid out well here and I’ll spare you the searching.
Removing Telnyx from the supported list doesn’t mean it won’t work – it does however mean that configuration because far harder, 3CX won’t provide support, no testing is done before new versions are released, and more importantly the provider sometimes can’t be used when the PBX is Hosted by 3CX.
Phone Provider Fanvil
Longer time installers and distributors of IP Phones know that you get what you pay for. Partners were quick to notice when 3CX replaced the “Preferred Phones” with Fanvil – a company plagued with bad firmware, poor hardware, and multi-year bugs like DST. While the author doesn’t know how much 3CX received (or that they did) to promote Fanvil, 3CX’s past behavior paints a very damning picture.
Both of these above moves by 3CX indicates the company does not have their customers best interests in mind and will absolutely harm their partners and customers to make a quick buck.
